The Small Wonder
Although it’s the second-smallest state in the union, Delaware offers lots of great opportunities for outdoor exploration, education, and family fun to both guests and residents alike. Southern Delaware’s unique highlights include beautiful beaches, scenic wetlands, and a rich historical legacy.
Beaches
Delaware’s wonderful beaches are some of the East Coast’s most popular summertime destinations. Known for their unparalleled water quality and pristine shorelines, the First State’s coastal oases offer boardwalks, shopping, dining, novelty stores, rides, and more. With over a dozen beautiful beaches from which to choose, Southern Delaware offers coastal enjoyment for everyone!
Trails
Get outside and enjoy our state’s distinctive natural beauty. The varied trail systems flowing across Southern Delaware put explorers in direct contact with tranquil marshes, verdant forests, and diverse historical landmarks. Additionally, most of our trails are bike-friendly, allowing visitors to easily shift from appreciating nature to touring one of the area’s many scenic towns.
Bay
Life is better by the bay. Fed by numerous rivers and streams from both Delaware and New Jersey, the Delaware Bay serves as a nexus between the region’s inland waterways and the mighty Atlantic Ocean. Bay waters tend to be gentler and more forgiving than ocean surf, making a bay beach the perfect setting to maximize the tranquility of your coastal experience.
Rich History
As one of the original 13 colonies and the first state to ratify the US Constitution, Delaware has a rich historical legacy reaching back to our country’s inception. Lewes was the site of the first settlement in Delaware, being founded as a Dutch whaling and trading area in 1631. Moreover, Cape Henlopen’s Fort Miles was an important US Army installation during World War II. Our area is a singular repository of living history, so come and see its wonders for yourself.
Investment in the community
Southern Delaware is a friendly, devoted, and tightly knit community that cares deeply about its gorgeous public spaces. Our residents happily reinvest in our neighborhoods, parks, and other popular sites to keep our area as welcoming as possible. There are also a number of organizations that help to support the preservation of the wonderful scenery here in Southern Delaware.
