The animals of Southern Delaware
Southern Delaware is teeming with wildlife. From the majestic bald eagle to the elegant white-tailed deer, there’s always something to keep on the lookout for.
Birdwatchers flock to Southern Delaware every year to catch a glimpse of some of the state’s most exotic and elusive birds. Here’s a rundown of two of our most popular: the great blue heron and the eastern screech owl.
The great blue heron is a regal bird often found wading in water. It’s easily identifiable by its large curved neck and the blue stripe that runs down its head. At 4ft tall, the blue heron is the largest heron in North America and can be spotted at quite a distance. The bird is traditionally a blue-gray color but sports brighter-coloured feathers during mating season, making it even easier to spot.
The eastern screech owl is named after its sharp cry indicating alarm or agitation. You’ll typically find this bird nesting in wood-duck boxes over winter. When threatened, the eastern screech owl camouflages itself against the trees by stretching its body and tightening its feathers.
