White-tailed Deer

White-tailed Deer

Odocoileus virginianus

This common species is easily recognized by the white fur on the underside of its tail, which it flashes to signal to predators that it is aware of their presence. This behavior saves the deer from expending too much energy fleeing, since most predators will recognize that pursuing an alerted deer is a futile endeavor.

Lontra canadensis

This creature is found in fresh and brackish waters throughout Delaware. It is so fast, secretive, and elusive that many residents are unaware that it inhabits the state.

The gray fox is less common and less frequently seen in Delaware than the well-known red fox. It is the only canid species in America capable of climbing trees.
